Ywam School of Writing

As missionaries we serve with a missions movement that equips the workers through the University of the Nations.

This University is called the University of the Nations (UofN.edu), founded in 1978 in Kona, Hawaii.

To enter this University every person starts with a Discipleship Training School, offered at more than 700 different YWAM locations around the globe.

After this DTS, you can choose to continue to study in the area of your interest to better prepare yourself for missionary service in the area of your calling. Gifts and passion.

In YWAM San Jose, Costa Rica we will offer a brand new school this July 2019 called “School of writing”.

So if you have completed a DTS with YWAM and are interested in taken another school with the UofN in the area of writing, then watch this video for more info:

The school will be offered in Spanish and English!

Our DNA as YWAM

We all know we have DNA. Just recently I was helping my eldest daughter do an experiment for school in which she was supposed to extract and show her DNA. It was quite fascinating I must say as I had never done this in my high school.

I took a photo of our DNA, which of course could barely be seen with our human eyes, by simple seeing the strand floating in water with a little food coloring. To have an up close look we would need to get a microscope to observe what it is made of.

Well, YWAM has a DNA as well. The way God made us as a mission, the things He spoke to us that are key for our growth, how we grow and the things He has shaped us with.

Sometimes like our human DNA we can’t fully perceive or appreciate this DNA unless we take it under the loop, put it under the microscope so to say.

So this coming week in YWAM Mazatlan, Mexico there will be an event called DNA Infusion led by the founders of YWAM Loren & Darlene Cunningham, with David Hamilton, vice-president of strategic innovation with the University of the Nations as well as several other Global Leaders of the mission who will impart this DNA.

Here is little video of Darlene describing what the DNA is: Darlene on YWAM DNA

Giacomo and I myself get to form a small part of this gathering. We will be leaving this week and fly to Mazatlan and will seek to only inspire new leaders, but also infuse them with the YWAM DNA.

Why is this important? If we don’t understand why we were called into existence, who we are and what God has given to us, we will not secure the future of our existence and God wants us to continue into the future, to multiply, to expand His kingdom, to reach out to all who have not heard the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

We all want to know who we are, what has been placed within us, why we exist, what runs through our veins that God has put there to use for the expansion of His kingdom.

This coming two weeks in Mazatlan we will do just that, discovering together the DNA God has given Youth with a Mission with a new generation of leaders!!

Quality education comes in a box

A few years ago in our mission an idea arose of bringing education to remote areas around the world.

Since we are a Christian University with a focus on missions, the term coined was:

“University in a box” – by our founder Loren Cunningham.

At the Campus in Kona Hawaii they started working on converting a shipping container into a mobile classroom to be able to bring it to remote locations such as Papua New Guinea, where quality education was not available.

Now here in Costa Rica, in cooperation with a local company we were able to convert a long shopping container into a mobile classroom to bring quality education in the area of technology to remote areas of Costa Rica.

Soon we will start bringing it to different places to be put in use for children in areas without good access to learning technical skills and digital platforms for the use of seeing their communities and cities transformed and grow.

Exciting new things are u folding and we believe this is only the beginning of seeing a generation not only reached with a message of love and truth but also bringing quality education in a box!

Bringing quality does not mean more money, it means coming together with our resources and with creativity come up with innovative ideas to help those with little access to get access remotely!

Exciting new times…

A 20 year old word…

These past few days I was reminded of something very important….

In the beginning of 1999, twenty years ago, during these exact months, Giacomo and I were in Worcester South Africa with Youth With A Mission. We were participating in a Community Development School at the new purchased YWAM Training Center in South Africa.

It was during this time (as a very newly wed couple) that God spoke to us about starting a new YWAM Training Facility, University of the Nations Campus in the capital of Costa Rica.

We have been married 21 years this year!!

We had no idea what that all meant, but it was the word of the Lord to us. This word is now exactly 20 years old, 15 of those years have been pioneering this new YWAM Training Center, University of the Nations Campus, which we started in June 2004!!

Tomorrow, March 10th, after twenty years of being away from this exact place and not having been back as a couple since then (Giacomo has alone), we are going to South Africa to partake in our annual leadership meetings of the University of the Nations.

Not only did God give us a word of a brand new YWAM Missionary training Center, but He also has allowed us over the past 5 years to form part of a body of leaders on an international level. The privilege to learn from amazing leaders who laid the foundation that we are now building on is truly incredible and continues to be for us a tremendous honor and blessing.

The Word was clear: “Raise up and equip young people who will be the next generation of Spirit led leaders in society in Costa Rica and around the world.”

Since early 1999, we have followed after God, sought His will on how to go about starting this new training location for missionaries, equipping them, loving them, training them and sending them out as passionate followers/disciples of Jesus.

In those years we have served in many different places and have been able to see God do amazing things and we have been able to train close to 1000 young people from our location, sending them into the nations with the Gospel of Jesus Christ!!!

****** When God gives you a Word, you make steps to walk towards the fulfillment of that Word and scripture says that His Word will never return void ******

Tomorrow we will embark on a 2 day journey to travel to South Africa. Pray for our children as they stay in Costa Rica. Our oldest have exam week while we are gone, our youngest has already cried several times and will miss mommy the most (and mommy will find it hard to leave)…..but we believe this is part of what the Lord has for us.

As I reflect on twenty years, I reflect on God’s faithfulness to our lives and that what He has given to us. Not just our beautiful kids and how He has blessed us that way, but the extended family of YWAM San Jose. This beautiful family that has gone through all kinds of trials and challenges and has recently moved into our ‘promised land’….

Reflecting on that makes us anticipate what God might want to do in the next 20 years through our lives and the YWAM San Jose, Costa Rica training facility and family.

Giacomo and I believe the Lord wants to give us a fresh word for the next 20 years, will you join us in prayer for that. We will be visiting the very same place we were 20 years ago, of which we unfortunately do not have any digital photos, but we might be able to find some ‘printed’ photos and then show you what things are looking like today.

How exciting to co-create with God, to listen to His voice, to believe that what He speaks will come to pass and will never return void!!

****** Listen for His voice today, quiet your heart and He will speak *****

What is a DTS?

In Youth With a Mission the Lord called us to train our missionaries. In 1968 the very first training school was offered in Lausanne, Switzerland. Why you might ask? Because the Lord directed our founders Loren and Darlene Cunningham to do so and we have learned over the 58 years of YWAM that when the Lord speaks we radically obey. Not only did God speak to us to train our missionaries, but He also spoke to have a University and so in 1978 the University of the Nations was called into existence. (Click on the links for more info).

Ok, great, training, but what is DTS?

What started out as the School of Evangelism of almost one year was later shortened to a more concise discipleship training school, thus DTS, of 20-24 weeks long. The first 12 weeks would be spend in the classroom, receiving solid biblical teaching from teachers from around the world on a variety of topics that would help the student to grow in their personal relationship with God, their understanding of God’s character, nature and ways as well as how to walk in their identity as a follower of Jesus.

Speakers from around the world teaching you about the ways of God

It is then followed by a 8-12 weeks field assignment, all part of the DTS course. The first phase which we often call “Lecture phase”, can’t exist without the proper field assignment, which we also call “Outreach phase”. The two phases go together and must be completed before calling yourself a true “ywam-er”.

The Discipleship Training School is an intense time of learning both during lecture time as well as in the live-learn environment. All students live together on our YWAM Campus, share meals with the full time missionaries serving with YWAM and will have several corporate times of worship, intercession and family nights during their time with us. It is all part of the process of learning, growing in our relationship with the Lord, while also growing in our relationship with God’s people and with God’s world as we go on the field assignment together after our lecture phase is completed.

Living and learning together with people from around the world

After the Field Assignment is completed we then return to the YWAM Campus where we initiated our journey and will have another few days of ‘debrief’ or ‘evaluation’ before we have a ‘graduation’ night in which we commission our students into the next thing the Lord has called them to do to expand His kingdom.

Some students stay on as full time missionaries with either their host location, where they completed their DTS or another YWAM Campus around the globe. You are now officially part of the YWAM Family and are able to join any YWAM location that the Lord would call you to.

Fun is part of the DTS, learning new languages and getting to know new cultures

Others hear the call from the Lord to return to their home town, either for education purposes or to enter into a sphere of society and bring the kingdom of God in the area of their degree.

No matter what your goal is for doing a DTS with YWAM, it can serve many different purpose, but keep in mind that this course is designed to challenge and grow you in your relationship with the Lord, with others and with God’s world. It is meant to inspire and cultivate that relationship towards growth resulting a Christ like character, which is based on a solid Biblical foundation, the Holy Spirit and a personal application of Biblical truth. It seeks to equip you in further service and respond to the heart cry of God to make Him known among the nations.

What does it require?

Not much really! Do you have a desire to grow in your relationship with God and your understanding of God. Are you willing to take 6 months of your life to invest in this, go deeper, grow in a Biblical Worldview, being inspired on how to make God known in new and creative ways? Have you finished high school and are not sure where to go in life or simply want to lay more foundation in your faith before heading out into the world, then this is something you might want to consider.

Celebrating the nations every day while your are in DTS

Does it cost me something?

Yes, it will cost you something, besides time you will need to cover the tuition of the course, which is different based on the YWAM location where you take the course. You will cover food, housing, travel (field assignment) and operational costs of the course. If you live far away from the location you choose, you will have to cover your airfare there and back.

Is it worth it?

Absolutely! God is raising up a new generation that walks with Him, talks with Him and is led by His Holy Spirit and is willing to radically obey what He calls them to do. Doing DTS can be the first step in the process of becoming a full time missionary either with YWAM or another organization. Putting aside 6 months of our lives to go deeper with God, know His ways, obey His ways, love His people and go out and spread the good news of the Gospel is more than worth it, don’t you think?
